ericaI am mostly self-taught; aside from a very informative couple of years in Jean Bachynski’s art classes in high school in Winnipeg, my art instruction consisted of absorbing whatever I could from my talented and educated sisters, and from obsessively reading books and attending workshops.

I have dabbled in different painting media (watercolours, oils, ink), but I love acrylic for their versatility. They dry quickly enough for me to be able to glaze and achieve the effect of glowing light that I love, and the vibrant colours and textures are just glorious.

I love painting outside, especially in the heat of the summer, even though my paint dries quicker and bugs and stuff LOVE settling into the paint! Oh well, a million years from now, a new species of intelligent beings will discover a fruit fly encased in my acrylic paint and they will marvel at its amazing preservation. Or so the makers of Liquitex and Golden acrylic paints would have me believe…

More often during these rainy long nights, I hibernate in my loft condo which I’ve converted into a bachelor pad/art studio, with my painting view overlooking the Victoria city skyline. This allows me leisurely evenings of messiness. I don’t own a television set, and I don’t ever want to; it’s far more fun to paint.

I would currently call myself a landscape painter. I love Victoria and the region where I live, and I choose my subjects based on depth, light, movement, and patterns of texture and colours I can’t ignore. I always paint to communicate a feeling I had in a place. I hope you like them, and if you do, I hope you contact me.

Thanks for visiting.
